If a pipe has already frozen

You can warm the accessible section gently with a hair dryer or a space heater kept clear of anything flammable. Never use an open flame on a pipe.

If the pipe has already burst, shut off the water at the main immediately, which is why it is worth knowing where that valve is before winter. Killing the water turns a flood into a puddle. Older homes and repeat freezes

Some homes freeze in the same spot every year. A pipe that has frozen once is more likely to freeze again, because the split may have been repaired without addressing the cause.
